‘She’s like a WWI soldier in shellshock’: Jihadi bride Shamima Begum’s family lawyer likens her to traumatised British heroes and says the UK has a moral duty to bring her newborn son home
The lawyer representing the family of Shamima Begum (pictured inset before she left the UK) Tasnime Akunjee (seen top right on ITV’s Good Morning Britain) said today the 19-year-old is in a ‘state of trauma’ after she was interviewed inside a refugee camp in northern Syria.
He compared the young jihadi bride to a ‘First World War soldier in shellshock’, saying she needs to be psychologically assessed by professionals. Shamima (pictured speaking to Sky News in a northern Syrian refugee camp yesterday, left) who left Bethnal Green in east London to marry an ISIS fighter in Syria, gave birth to a baby boy in a Syrian refugee camp on Saturday.
In an extraordinary interview with Sky News yesterday she said people should feel sorry for her and should allow her to return to Britain with her newborn, sparking outrage back in the UK. She was seen next to a woman wearing a niqab (bottom right) who appeared to be cradling her baby.
