Carrier USS Stennis entered Persian Gulf Friday; Iran launched naval exercise

[Ed. – The Iranian Revolutionary Guard units conducted surveillance of the John C Stennis formation in the Strait of Hormuz, and reportedly performed some rocket launches.  However, the U.S. Navy’s statement on the rocket launches is that they weren’t directed at the Stennis group.  There’s no reporting I can find on the distance from the Stennis at the time of the rocket launch(es), but the bottom line is that the Navy didn’t consider it bad seamanship, provocative, or threatening.  That tells me it wasn’t.  This is in contrast to the Navy’s clear statement in January 2016 that rocket launches conducted by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, near the USS Harry S Truman, were highly provocative and unsafe.]

Television showed amphibious forces landing on Iran’s Gulf island of Qeshm during the exercises, in which naval vessels, helicopters, drones, rocket launchers and commando units also took part. …
The U.S. aircraft carrier John C. Stennis entered the Gulf on Friday and was shadowed by Revolutionary Guards speedboats. Reuters witnesses also saw an Iranian drone flying nearby.
