Two men held over Espoo pizzeria fire

Police have held two men on suspicion of involvement in a fire at a pizzeria in Espoo on Sunday night. Investigators have not yet revealed how the fire was set, but say they believe it was an act of arson.

Police say that a fire that took place at a pizzeria in Espoo’s Leppävaara district Sunday night may have been deliberately set. Daily Helsingin Sanomat spoke with the owner of the restaurant, who said that a fire bomb had been hurled at the premises. The owner also said that he had been threatened on Midsummer Day, Saturday.

“I just received video material where you can see who threw the fire bomb. I shall take it to the police,” Mobin added.

Police have been tight-lipped about how the fire got started. They are however investigating suspected offences such as vandalism. Chief Inspector Teemu Värtinen of the Espoo police department said that two people had been detained in connection with the fire.

“Two men have been held. I will not say anything about their backgrounds at this stage,” Värtinen said.

At the time of the fire, both the restaurant and dwelling located above it were occupied, but no one was hurt in the incident. Pizzeria owner Mohamed Mobin said eight customers in the establishment were put in danger.

He added that customers and staff tried to put out the blaze, but were unsuccessful. Fire officials later intervened to bring the situation under control. Mobin said that the restaurant was completely destroyed.

Police are investigating the motive for the incident and said that they would provide further updates on Monday.
