Sweden: A Swedish moral failure…….

Down right stupid….

They tripped on their own supposed moral superiority, causing more people to drown in the oceans trying to reach Sweden, while enriching criminal gangs herding them towards our borders in the process. It was all out of sanctimonious chest thumping on how much a humanitarian ‘superpower’ they are. Fiddlesticks.

The billions of dollars that Sweden put into asylum reception centers would have been able to help many more in the surrounding area. Sweden has instead reduced their aid budget to help a small number at home. This is nothing more than a moral short circuit, and displays brutally clear how rational thinking consistency is lacking in Swedish politics . We mainly nurtured our self-image.

Bostrom: A Swedish moral failure

GUEST COLUMN Briefly, the Swedish migration policy does not result in any financial gain for society, despite some starry-claims to the contrary, writes guest columnist Håkan Boström.

Tino Sanandajis newly published research compilation – Mass Challenge – has rightfully received substantial attention. The book has been raised here on the editorial page, so I will not go through it in detail here (I have a longer review in the next issue of the academic journal, Response).

Briefly, the Swedish migration policy does not result in any financial gain for society, despite some starry-claims to the contrary. It would require a miracle with the employment numbers to get a profit even in the long term. Perhaps the clearest outcome of the asylum-migration are rather greater inequality. The relative poverty doubled in Sweden between 1991 and 2013. Half of the doubling can be explained by immigration. The effects we see especially in social problems such as overcrowding, segregation, poor school performance and gang crime concentrated in certain areas. The political consequences are also significant.
One can , on the other hand, argue that Sweden is a rich country. That we have been even richer, but this policy is perhaps for no serious reason is set against the humanitarian operation. Perhaps even wider gaps is a price you have to pay, some would argue.
It is a seemingly strong argument. Bringing financial calculations can be seen both crass, selfish and cold heart when people are drowning in the Mediterranean. But it is a false opposition. For of those who want to help people in need is not primarily a big heart, but a large brain.

Swedish policy has rather been singularly ineffective when considered as a humanitarian mission. That you have to get to Sweden for help, implies that it will be difficult to get here, and is the very reason why people drown in the Mediterranean Sea.

According to information currently discussing EU countries a radically different system, with buffer zones outside the EU’s borders rather than an asylum convention long since been overtaken by history. This is probably a necessary step.
