Forced returns doubled last year
In 2016 Finnish police returned 6,657 people who arrived in Finland to their home countries — this is double the number of returns in 2015. According to the police board, the increase is due to the larger number of asylum seekers in 2016 and the larger number of rejected asylum applications.
Police returned 6,657 people from Finland last year. Of that figure, 1,671 people received an assisted return, which means an escorted flight to their home country. The majority of the assisted returns took place via charter flights organised by the Iraqi police.

According to the police board, the increase is due to the larger number of asylum seekers in 2016 and the larger number of rejected asylum applications.
Of the 1,671 assisted forced returns in 2016, approximately 1,400 were Iraqis who were returned to Baghdad on charter flights.
