These symbols used to mean something:
Now they don’t. If I see articles from either of those sources and many more besides (especially ones I’ve personally deconstructed recently) from the legacy or main stream media I check carefully for bias, mis-statement and or misdirection and obfuscation.
There are a plethora of new sites I look to for information on various topics, some have grown out of blogs I’ve followed for years like Breitbart, Washington Free Beacon, into largely reliable sources. That still doesn’t allow me the luxury of believing or accepting everything I read there without applying my own common sense and cross referencing, when I can, with my own personal sources of information.
Why does this matter? Overnight I put an article on Facebook from Infowars. The article itself is about a counter movement against George Soros funded NGOs that have been destabilising Eastern European countries. George Soros is behind the funding of many of the anti-Israel NGOs I know are trying to wreck Israel.
A new initiative called Stop Operation Soros (SOS) is launching in the Balkan nation of Macedonia to counter the influence of globalist billionaire George Soros.
The founders of the group called on all “free-minded citizens” to join them in the “fight against one-mindedness in the civil sector, which is devised and led by George Soros,” reports a Slovenian newspaper.
Soros-funded non-government organizations have monopolized civil society in Macedonia and used their influence to suppress dissenting views, said SOS cofounder Nikola Srbov.
I’m fully aware of the crazy stuff on Infowars and, of course, one of my “friends” immediately goes to Infowars and finds the most virulently anti-Israel piece he can and proudly posts a link. It’s a boilerplate hate-Israel piece written by someone thoroughly indoctrinated in Israel hatred by the very same anti-Israel NGOs that Soros is funding! Here’s the key paragraph from the hate Israel piece:
Moreover, I am not an expert on Israel’s conquest and occupation of Palestine. I know more than most people. I was rescued from Zionist propaganda by Israeli historians, such as Ilan Pappe, by Jewish intellectuals, such as Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein, by documentary film makers, such as John Pilger, by Israeli journalists such as Uri Avnery and the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, and by an Israeli houseguest who is an Israeli member of an Israeli peace group that opposes Israeli destruction of Palestinian homes, villages, and orchards in order to build apartment blocks for settlers.
Yes, Infowars ran this oped by a fool who admits upfront he’s not qualified to comment and then reveals he’s stupid enough to have been sucked in by the grand masters of the hate Jews and Israel team. And I’m sure there are other deluded writings on Infowars. The thing is the New York Times has run just as many and often times worse pieces over the years I’ve been critiquing it.
I don’t want to defend Infowars in particular, but the point here is that Mastheads no longer mean that much. I shared an article that had merit and covered ground that the lame stream media isn’t covering. The source is just part of the calculation an intelligent reader needs to make when evaluating it. But the days of believing something because the Washington Post, New York Times, AP, Reuters or the BBC say it should be gone for all of you reading this.
