Keeping them outside of the West would have been the most prudent of decisions, but we have morons as politicians, so that’s where we are.

Holger Münch warned of the dangers of returning jihadis

Holger Münch, president of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, said battle-hardened jihadis with extensive extremist networks were Europe-bound.

Mr Munch said: “Jihadist returnees are often extremely radicalised, have military training and are brutalised by war and combat experiences.”

He added: “Jihadists get to know each other in Syrian or Iraqi war zones and maintain close contact and relationships that they still maintain once they return.

Jihadis are already in Europe

“The networking crosses borders and has already reached Europe.”

The relentless squeezing of Islamic State positions in Syria and Iraq by the US-led coalition, Russian jets and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is thought to lead to a terrorist exodus from the Middle East.

Two years after the so-called “caliphate” was proclaimed, the dominion of the jihadists has shrunk and they have lost important supply routes and cities.

Even de facto capital Raqqa and the Iraqi city of Mosul could fall soon.

Mr Munch’s fears were echoed by FBI director James Comey, who said: “There will be a terrorist diaspora from Syria as we have never seen before.”

He added that the danger posed by the returnees, was one of the greatest security challenges for the coming years.
