Slimane Bouhafs said that the light of Jesus would outshine that of Islam. For that, he got five years for “blasphemy.” The statement he made, however, was simply an expression of the Christian faith — something that any Christian aside from woolly-minded Leftists would believe.
And so this incident encapsulates what so many Christians in the West don’t understand: when we held our Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest, many Christians excoriated us, saying it wasn’t charitable for Christians to offend the religious sensibilities of Muslims. What they don’t get is that any expression of the Christian faith is liable to be deemed blasphemous by Muslims such as those who prosecuted Bouhafs. If Christians must curtail their behavior to avoid offending Muslims, they will soon have to stop being Christians.
