Church terror: Suicide bomber stabs Catholic priest and tries to blow up congregation
A KNIFEMAN stabbed a Catholic priest and tried to attack hundreds of worshippers during a Sunday mass.
Priest Albert Pandiangan was holding a service in Indonesia when the attacker struck.Eyewitnesses said the knifeman sat with the congregation before running towards the priest with a knife, stabbing him in the arm.
The knifeman was carrying a homemade bomb in his backpack.
Worshippers said they heard an explosion that sounded like fireworks during the attack in the city of Medan on the western island of Sumatra.
But determined to save their priest they caught the attacker and restrained him as they called the police.
Local media say the attacker, an 18-year-old man, was armed with an axe when he went on the rampage.
Chief detective Nur Fallah said: “Somebody tried to kill the priest by pretending to attend the church service and at that time tried to explode something, like a firecracker, but the firecracker didn’t explode, it only fumed.”
Police are treating the stabbing as an act of terrorism.
