Hollande caves in to May on Calais and UK expats: French President makes key concessions

Demanding to begin formal Brexit talks sooner, Francois Hollande has made two concessions to Prime Minister Theresa May on UK border controls in Calais and the right of Britons living in France to remain. But the French president warned Mrs May she will not be able to restrict migration if she wants to maintain Britain’s trading relationship with the European Union. The discussions come after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the UK should ‘take a moment’ over its plans to sever ties with Brussels , while warning against leaving the negotiations ‘up in the air’.

The ‘jungle’ refugee camp in Calais now has a record population of 7,307 despite attempts to demolish the sprawling centre.

Officials encountered 6,429 ‘clandestine entrants’ in the six months from the beginning of April to the end of September last year – compared to 2,411
