PM Sipilä offers condolences, condemns Nice strike as “an attack against open society”

Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä has expressed solidarity with the French government and people following a lorry attack that killed 84 people in the southern French city of Nice during Bastille Day national celebrations. Sipilä extended condolences to the French people and the victim’s families and described the attack as an “attack against open society”.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä took to the microblogging site Twitter early Friday morning to express shock at the attack in Nice that killed 84 people and injured more than 100.

“I am shocked about the news of Nice. My thoughts are with France and our French friends,” Sipilä wrote.

In a release issued later on Friday, Sipilä said that the “terror attack carried out in Nice, France, was a terrible act directed at ordinary citizens.”

“It was also an attack against open society. It is more important than ever to defend our common European values based on openness and democracy. Our thoughts are now with France. We extend our deep condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” Sipilä added.

Sipilä is currently in Mongolia attending the ASEM summit of Asian and European leaders.

Soini: Attack the work of a terrorist organisation

Foreign Minister Timo Soini said that the lorry driver’s modus operandus suggested that a terrorist organisation was behind the strike and said that it has prompted Finnish leaders to consider security at public events.

Police chief Seppo Kolehmainen told Yle that the attack would prompt Finland to evaluate the situation in Finland. However the security and intel police Supo said that there is no immediate need to heighten readiness for a possible terror attack.

ForMin: No Finns known to be affected

Meanwhile the Finnish Foreign Ministry said that so far it has no information that any Finnish citizens are among the dead or wounded. The ministry as well as the embassy in Paris are said to be following the situation closely.

The city is a popular holiday destination for Finns, and some nationals also have permanent homes in the region. Finland’s embassy in France has so far received 86 travel notifications from Finns in France.

However officials speculated that in reality there may be many more in the area since travelers don’t always file travel notifications. Finnish ambassador in Paris Risto Piipponen estimated that there are likely to be hundreds of Finns in France at the moment.

Finns who have contacted the embassy have been advised to stay indoors.
