Revealed: Hidden network of ISIS tunnels where jihadis can live for weeks underground to avoid being caught by Peshmerga forces
Jihadis were forced below ground (pictured) as they lost the initiative in the fight for the village of Mufti, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. An ISIS fighter blew himself up when Kurdish Peshmerga forces, which have pushed them back 50 miles in the past six days, followed them into the tunnels. Mufti had been under ISIS control since the summer of 2014 but was liberated on Tuesday.
US and coalition air strikes helped the Peshmerga advance and are playing a strategic role on the ground by providing tactical support to military leaders. A US B52 heavy bomber hit one house exposing the network of tunnels (pictured left) which ISIS had used to escape coalition detection. Some of the tunnels were 10ft deep – with the system spread out across a quarter of a mile.
