Turkey: court seizes anti-Erdogan newspaper
Zaman was put in administration for links with magnate Gulen
ISTANBUL – An Istanbul court has decided to place in administration the editorial group that includes the Zaman newspaper, Turkey’s largest circulation daily, because of its links to the magnate and imam Fethullah Gulen, the former ally then sworn enemy of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, local news agencies say.
The request, accepted Friday by the judge, was presented by the office of the Chief Prosecutor of Istanbul. Now the judicial administrators must take control of the group, appointing a new editorial management, as has happened in the past in similar cases. The decision is already causing alarm and protests over the threats to freedom of the press in Turkey, already under heavy pressure in recent months.
