Savonlinna’s doctor, Eero Timgren, is familiar with the Islamic faith’s confessional thinking. He has been taking care of 40 000 Muslims over eight years and has lived on several occasions in different parts of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
He has followed with a bit of puzzlement the wave of asylum seekers coming to Finland, and above all, who those asylum seekers are. We Finns are according to Timgren a little naive of the motives of asylum seekers applying for asylum in Finland.
– According to the information I have received from many of the young men coming to Finland, many have military or police training. I think it is a bit worrying, says Timgren.
Recently there have been highly publicized cases in which asylum seekers have allegedly harassed and “touched” Finnish women. This is explained, among other things, by the fact that those young men coming from a different culture do not know the ways and means, for example, that a woman’s eye contact with the man does not mean that she is “free game” for the men. Eero Timgren does not even begin to believe in this ignorance. In Islamic countries, contacts, even discussions, with a Muslim women outside of the family are prohibited without “a go between”.

After years working in the Arab world, Eero Timgren has well familiarized himself with example of the Arabs’ relationship with work, management and commerce. Many of them are brilliant diplomats and businessmen, and get others to do the easy jobs for them. Physical labor or other work demanding patience may be difficult for them.

He also points out that for a Muslim, Islam is both a religion, a social system and the law.The law called Sharia is based upon the Koran, and is completely different from our western way of thinking about why the laws exist at all. In Western countries, the function of the law is to protect people, Sharia regulates all areas of life of a Muslim and protects a Muslim leader, i.e. the Caliphs, whose task is to spread Islam through holy war, or jihad, to subjugate the non-Muslims to Islam.

The Islamic social system is, therefore, very far from the western democracy, equality and the rule of law. Exporting democracy to Islamic countries, the so-called Arab Spring makes it, according Eero Timgren turned out to be a well-meaning fool’s tragedy.
– We in Finland must bear the consequences of our own values system and our commitments. What are the risks, for example, of the massive immigration has caused to us, are we are able to manage those risks, and whether our values are strong enough that we are able to adjust those coming to Finnish society, Timgren reflects a seriousness and hope, that people will become more aware more than before, on the fact that the integration of people coming from completely different cultural into the Finnish way of life is a long and demanding task, and we must be realistic about it.
