Sweden’s Social Democrat-Green government’s decision to tighten asylum rules has received harsh criticism from both right-wing and left-wing parties. Even the Young Greens of Sweden have raised their voice against the mother party.

“We think that these abatements are unacceptable. They are aiming to hit hard on the refugees’ possibilities to come to Sweden and that is really, really bad,” Young Greens spokesman Lorenz Tovatt tells Radio Sweden.

While many left-wingers were disappointed by the announcement, some of the country’s right-wing parties argued that the measures were insufficient.

“I’m worried that this won’t be enough. I welcome the prime minister’s decision to make temporary residence permits the main rule, though,” Anna Kinberg Batra, leader of the conservatite Moderates, tells Swedish Radio News.

“They should also be ready now to implement our suggestion that all those who reach our borders having applied for asylum in a different EU country are sent back as soon as possible,” she added.

Sweden will downsize its asylum policy to meet the European Union’s minimum requirements, with tighter rules and border controls.

  1. So 3 out of 10 support the disappearance of Sweden. Too little too late indeed.
