Dr. Bostom is the voice of reason in this. Assad was an OK dictator for the standards of the Middle East (I emphasise for the very very low standards of the Middle East). The only reason Obama got it into his head that he must be removed was because of his perverse love for the Muslim Brotherhood and the Jihadis. From the very beginning Assad’s opponents were not any kind of Western-style democracy advocates, but the Sunni jihadis who were sick and tired of living in a secular state which was run by a Kafir Alawite who on top of everything else respected the Christians of Syria. How dare he!
So now the only reason the West still stubbornly insists that “Assad must go!” even though now we know that the opposition to Assad is really ISIS, is due to Obama’s monstrously big ego! He cannot admit to an obvious mistake and back off and stop arming the Jihadis. Hence, Putin who has been much more mature and reasonable on the issue of Syria so far had no choice but to intervene. And remember, whatever you think of Putin, he has been asking the West to join him in fighting ISIS for quite a while now. But instead, Obama regime has done noting which was not cosmetic and unserious and actually kept arming the Jihadis.
Putin really has no choice in this. He could not let a Sunni fanatic regime be established in Syria, right in his backyard, just in order to keep nursing Obama’s idiotic ego! Obama is responsible for his own humiliation in this issue! All of Obama’s huffing and puffing now is nothing but a face-saving measure which if anything will actually give out whose side he is really on (ISIS’ side!!!) If Obama were a smart man (which he most definitely is not) in order to salvage what is left of his dwindling prestige he would have just gotten out of the way and would have let Putin and Assad take care of business in Syria and he would have stopped meddling in the affairs of Syria altogether! But I doubt that he is capable of that kind of wise act!
So Dr. Bostom is right! I am with Putin on this and I blame Obama for having created a world were a nasty guy like Putin can steal US’ thunder and do the right thing that Obama refuses to do.
