Feelings ran high at the Kirkkonummi Evitskog – “The atmosphere was deplorable”
Local people’s emotions ran high at times even hostile at the organized Kirkkonummi Evitskog a news conference on Tuesday evening.
“The atmosphere was tedious,” says Punavuoren reception center’s director Leena Markkanen.
Kirkkonummi Evitskog set up a temporary reception center to which 260 asylum-seekers have arrived in just over a week , most of whom are from the Middle East and North Africa. HS told of the wakeup reaction to the Center on Tuesday.
Local people’s fears of the newcomers erupted in the audience during the conference with name calling and with requirements to ensure security.
“The residents have security concerns over children’s safety and traffic. That, too, is caused bewilderment due to some of the refugees have walked on private land”, says Markkanen.
The presentation of the Centre’s activities was intended to dispel fear of the local residents.
“We are close, but now have to consider ways to break through these emotional fears.”
