2014 saw somewhat of a rise in damages inflicted on Nazi concentration camps. In April, an Italian tourist was caught stealing barbed wire from Auschwitz. A month later, the infamous concentration camp was struck again when tourists were found to be desecrating the site by writing graffiti and leaving other unwanted marks on the historical grounds.

During the summer, a German teacher was caught smuggling inmates’ possessions from the camp in order to show his students, and then in November, thieves stole the infamous “Arbeit macht frei” (work makes you free) sign from Dachau Concentration Camp.

The latest incident took place yesterday, after unknown assailants broke into the Langenstein-Zwieberge camp in Germany with a stolen bulldozer, causing some $62,000 in damages.

The bulldozer is believed to have been stolen from a building in the area. When police discovered it after the incident, it appears the suspects had lit it on fire.

The culprits used the bulldozer to smash through the gates of the camp, and proceeded to enter the camp where over 2,000 prisoners were worked to death, leaving a path of destruction in their wake.

Langenstein-Zwieberge was a subcamp of the infamous Buchenwald concentration camp, established at the tail end of 2014. Over 7,000 prisoners from 23 different countries were sent there by the Nazis to work as slave laborers.
