Thousands of protesters took to the streets after it emerged that ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak will not face murder charges over the killing of Arab Spring demonstrators in 2011.

Police fired teargas at a crowd of more 2,000 people who gathered near Tahrir Square to voice their opposition to the decision.

An Egyptian court dismissed the charges nearly four years after the uprising that ended the 86-year-old’s three-decade reign.

The ruling marks another major setback for the young activists who spearheaded the uprising many of whom are now in jail or have withdrawn from politics.
