Palestinian turns himself in to police after running over three Israeli soldiers
Tension mounts in Jerusalem and the West Bank after the third incident of cars driving into pedestrians in last two weeks
A Palestinian man turned himself in to police on Thursday after running over three Israeli soldiers in the latest incident involving cars colliding with pedestrians.
Hamam Masalmeh left one soldier in a critical condition and two more lightly wounded after ploughing into them while driving a white van between Bethlehem and Hebron on Wednesday.
He came to Etzion District Coordinating Office on Thursday and claimed the incident had been a simple traffic accident. Mr Masalmeh “turned himself into the security forces and has been taken for investigation,” said an Israeli military statement.
His father and brother had earlier been arrested. Another 15 Palestinians were detained in overnight raids by Israeli forces across the West Bank.
This incident was the third involving vehicles driving into pedestrians in the last two weeks. Earlier on Wednesday, Ibrahim Akri, a Palestinian man, drove a white van into people waiting at a light rail station in Jerusalem. One person was killed and 14 injured.
