When you have a clear message that resonates, you don’t have to outspend your opponents. And think about it, this comes after major vilification of the man by the state run (and other) faux media. It should be noted that career hack politician like EU hack Olli Rehn and Alexander Stubb spent over a 150 grand to get elected.
Halla-aho spent just 5,000 euros to secure election win
All of the winning MEPs in this May’s euro elections have now reported their campaign spending, with Sirpa Pietikäinen running the most expensive campaign, financed in large part by bank loans. Alexander Stubb’s spending was considerably lower, but came entirely from donations. And the Finns Party’s Jussi Halla-aho managed to win a seat by spending peanuts compared to his opponents.
All of the winning MEPs in this May’s European Parliamentary elections have now released figures of how much they spent on their election campaigns, following a deadline for reporting spending which passed on Monday.
The figures show that Finland’s top spender was Sirpa Pietikäinen from the National Coalition Party, who has sat as an MEP since 2008. Her campaign cost 180,000 euros, of which one third was a loan from a bank.
Former European Commissioner and Centre Party MP Olli Rehn clocked the second largest outlay, with a campaign costing 145,000 euros.
Easily the biggest winner on election night was the National Coalition Party’s Alexander Stubb, who won by far the highest number of votes of all candidates, but then declined to take up his seat in order to become prime minister.
The figures show Stubb spent 126,596 euros on his campaign, which came exclusively from donations given by individuals and corporations. The largest private donation, of 8,000 euros, came from Chaim “Poju” Zabludowicz, said to be among Finland’s richest individuals.
Other individual donors to Stubb’s campaign included bank chairman Björn Wahlroos, who gave 5,000 euros. Meanwhile Stubb raised 63,000 euros from corporate bodies towards his campaign.
But without doubt the most successful campaign in terms of the cost per vote came from Finns Party MP Jussi Halla-aho, who was Finland’s second most popular candidate at the May elections. The MEP, whose hard-right views on Islam and immigration have caused widespread controversy in the past, recorded campaign spending of a fraction of that of his rivals – under 5,000 euros.
