The party, which entered the Swedish parliament as late as 2010, currently has no seats in Brussels. According to party leader Jimmie Åkesson, they aim to reach their goal by being the most EU-critical party, news agency TT reports.

“We are currently seeing a growing number of Eu-critics in Europe, so it could be that the political map is redrawn after the Eu-elections. Then we can work with them and stop the development against more and more federalist, Åkesson said in his speech as the party launched its election campaign on the Långholmen island of Stockholm on Saturday.

Åkesson does however not want to say which group the Sweden Democrats would want to belong to, if they manage to get into the EU parliament. He is currently being courted by two controversial politicians: Marine le Pen from the National Front in France, and Geert Wilders from the Freedom Party in the Netherlands.

To be part of a group is important in the EU parliament, if you want influence, but Åkesson wants to keep that question open until after the election.

“We don’t know which group we could enter and be welcome in, and where we want to be. If we do not find a group where we are comfortable we can imagine to be groupless. The most important for us is to think long term. We do not want to enter into a co-operation where we cannot take responsibility for what we are part of,” Åkesson said.
