Libyan bank staff start strike after colleague killed

State news agency LANA said Jumhuriya staff across the country had gone on strike to condemn the killing of a bank employee in Sabha in the south

World Bulletin/News Desk

Employees at one of Libya’s biggest banks began a two-day strike on Wednesday, demanding greater protection after a colleague was shot dead at work, staff and state media said.

Libya’s government has been unable to control militias who helped oust Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 and refuse to disarm, and alongside the deteriorating security situation, the number of bank robberies have increased in the past few months.

State-owned Jumhuriya, which employs more than 5,000 staff in 146 branches, according to its website, is the main bank through which the government pays hundreds of thousands of civil servants.

State news agency LANA said Jumhuriya staff across the country had gone on strike to condemn the killing of a bank employee in Sabha in the south, accusing the government of failing to protect the branches.

20 killed in Yemen army headquarters attack; al Qaeda claims responsiblity

APRIL 03, 2014 , 2 : 10 PM GST

Aden: Al-Qaeda has claimed an attack on a Yemeni army headquarters in a tightly secured district of Aden in which 20 people died, most of them militants, a monitoring group said Thursday.

The building targeted in Wednesday’s attack is located in the heavily patrolled coastal district of Tawahi that hosts intelligence and political police headquarters, a naval base and a presidential residence.

The Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) affiliate of the global jihadist network claimed the attack in an online message, said the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors extremist organisations.

AQAP, which the United States views as Al-Qaeda’s most dangerous branch, said the attack killed “nearly 50 soldiers” and was part of its campaign “to “target the joint operation rooms that manage the US drones in the country”.

Washington has stepped up drone strikes in Yemen against the group in recent months.

Militants launched Wednesday’s attack on the northern side of the army headquarters, with some climbing a wall into the building as a suicide car bomber rammed his vehicle into a western entrance, Yemen army officials said.

The Syrian government troops killed 20 rebels on Thursday in a wide-scale offensive against rebel-held areas in the eastern countryside of the capital Damascus, the media reported.

The troops killed 20 rebels and injured tens of others near the Big Mosque of Damascus’ eastern suburb of Jobar, a hotbed of insurgency against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Xinhua reported citing official SANA news agency.

The battles in the rebel-held Jobar started three days ago, according to reports. The Syrian troops unleashed an offensive to dislodge the rebels from Jobar and other rebel-held suburbs in the eastern edge of Damascus.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the government troops bombarded Jobar on Thursday, adding that 10 rebels from radical militant groups were killed in the suburb of Mlaiha, another rebel-held suburb.

The Syrian troops decided to rid the eastern rim of Damascus from the armed rebels, following the army’s successive victories in the northern countryside of Damascus and the country’s central and northern regions.
