Four members of a Syrian family were stabbed to death on Monday in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, national media outlets reported.

Amin Ezzedine, Alexandria’s head of security, told Egypt’s Alhayat television that after their murder, the Syrian family’s house was set on fire.

The family is reportedly Christian but Ezzedine described the murder as criminal and “not sectarian.”

“The incident is criminal and there is a suspect and soon the truth about this will be unveiled,” he said.

The prosecution ordered an autopsy be carried out for the victims, Cairo-based daily al-Masry al-Youm reported.

At least 10 killed in latest South Sudan violence

Published: 10:01AM Wednesday February 19, 2014 Source: AP

The United Nations says at least 10 people have died in the latest outbreak of violence in South Sudan.

Fighting broke out early Tuesday (overnight NZT) in Malakal, which once was in rebel hands but is now mostly controlled by government troops, said South Sudanese military spokesman Col. Philip Aguer.

Mr Aguer said the rebels now control parts of eastern Malakal and suggested they had received reinforcements from outside the country.

“Possible external support to the rebels is there,” he said.

“There is lot of evidence that planes have been landing, planes dropping ammunition, whose planes we don’t know. Where they came from we don’t know. That is the subject of an investigation.”
