Bomb Attacks in Egypt Kill at Least 5 Police Officers

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

CAIRO — Three bombs exploded near police stations across greater Cairo on Friday morning, killing at least five officers and redoubling fears of a backlash against last summer’s military takeover.

The blasts took place despite intensified security measures in Cairo in anticipation of the commemoration on Saturday of the third anniversary of the 2011 Arab Spring revolt. The explosions suggested that even at high alert the police were unable to stop anti-government militants from penetrating the capital to stage apparently coordinated attacks, including detonating a car bomb at the gate of a heavily guarded security headquarters.

But the bombs also appeared to elicit spontaneous demonstrations of support for Gen. Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi, who led the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood last summer and has portrayed his brutal crackdown on the group as a struggle against terrorism. His supporters have urged Egyptians to demonstrate in Tahrir Square on Saturday to urge him to seek the presidency — he is expected to run unopposed — while officials have warned ominously that Mr. Morsi’s Islamists supporters might try to stir chaos on the anniversary as well.

DUBAI: A suspected Al-Qaeda insurgent who is on Saudi Arabia’s wanted list of 47 militants abroad, has been killed in Syria, the SITE monitoring group said on Friday.

Saudi national Abdullah Suleiman Salih al-Dhabah, known as Abu Ali al-Qasimi, waged jihad (holy war) in Pakistan and Afghanistan before going to Syria, where he was killed in the city of al-Bab in Aleppo by a rocket from a MiG plane, SITE said, citing online messages posted by Islamists on Jan. 18.

Riyadh broadly backs the Sunni rebels battling President Bashar Assad. But with the rise of Islamist militant factions in Syria, it is concerned that Saudis who joined the rebellion might one day return to wage an insurgency at home.
