HOWARD JACOBSON DEFENDS CHRISTIANITY……

Published on Jul 1, 2012

Jacobson’s evidence that Christians are being bashed is, he says, all in Geoffrey Robertson’s preceding speech. Jacobson would rather focus on why we shouldn’t be “bashing” Christians. He reminds the opposition that without Christianity — both our language and our self-knowledge is steeped in it, he says — they wouldn’t have the arguments, nay, the words, to speak out against the motion.

Christianity “made us”, he adds, and without it our idea of spirituality would still be “dancing around a goat wearing maxi dresses”. Christianity has refined us into the sort of people who appreciate the music of Purcell and Handel. Of course, he says, “Christianity is imperfect, but life is imperfect.”
