In a surprise move, Russia promised Monday to push its ally Syria to place its chemical weapons under international control and then dismantle them quickly to avert U.S. strikes.

The announcement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov came a few hours after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that Syrian President Bashar Assad could resolve the crisis surrounding the alleged use of chemical weapons by his forces by surrendering control of “every single bit” of his arsenal to the international community by the end of the week.

Kerry added that he thought Assad “isn’t about to do it,” but Lavrov, who just wrapped a round of talks in Moscow with his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Moallem, said that Moscow would try to convince the Syrians.

  1. For once, the Russians appear to be doing something constructive. That being said, the Russians can always give the Syrians nasty conventional weapons in exchange. Plus, once Assad’s regime is once again secure, the Russians can always return the CW. After all, they are the ones who have been supplying the major portion of Syria’s CW inventory.

By now, it should be fairly much apparent that Assad is “Moscow’s boy” and always has been (as well as his father). Does that make him “the lesser of two evils” in this civil war? I think not since the net result of Assad’s rule has been tyranny and support of terrorism.

The rebels are bad news too. There’s no side to favor in this war.

All that being said, removing Syria’s CW assets from the country can certainly strike a useful diplomatic compromise between the U.S. and Russia. Wadda ya think, TT?

    C ya,

There is no Santa Claus (aka TINSC)

    1. Hi TINSC! In my own opinion, I think that Putin, and by default, Assad, have pulled off a major coup, Russia has once again outfoxed the US as it did during the Cuban missile crisis. Also, you can rest assured that Russia removes some, (most likely those weapons it scooted out of Iraq) but not all of Assad’s arsenal. That’s how I see things shaping up. Obama has been a disaster.
