The more you scratch the surface of the different individual Islamic states (thank you Andy), the more you realize just how prevalent Jew hatred is throughout the Islamic world, due to the abundance of traditionally accepted Islamic textual references vilifying Jews. The writings and career of Mohammad Baqer al-Majlisi elucidate the imposition of Islamic law (Sharia) on non-Muslims in Shiite Iran. Al-Majlisi (d. 1699) was perhaps the most influential cleric of the Safavid Shiite theocracy in Persia. For six years at the end of the 17th century, he functioned as the de facto ruler of Iran, making him the Ayatollah Khomeini of his era. By design, he wrote many works in Persian to disseminate key aspects of the Shia ethos among ordinary persons. In his Persian treatise “Lightning Bolts Against the Jews,” Al-Majlisi describes the standard humiliating requisites for non-Muslims living under sharia, first and foremost the blood-ransom jizya, or poll-tax, based on Koran 9:29.

He then enumerates six other restrictions relating to worship, housing, dress, transportation, and weapons, before outlining the unique Shiite impurity or najis regulations. It is these latter najis prohibitions which lead anthropology professor Laurence Loeb — who studied and lived within the Jewish community of Southern Iran in the early 1970s — to observe, “Fear of pollution by Jews led to great excesses and peculiar behavior by Muslims.”

  1. It is important to recognize that Muslim and especially Arab hatred of Jews and Israel existed extremely long before the naqbah, or establishment of the state of Israel. A lot of it may be based on Muslim writings that came after and augment the Koran. But antisemitism goes beyond religious inspiration. There are Jew haters among people who have never seen a Jew, and who are not religious at all. A lot of antisemitism has become culturally entrenched. It is a complex global sociological phenomenon. Many think that it is essentially caused firstly by Jews being “different”, sticking to themselves and therefore being strange, then feared, then hated. Secondly, many think that antisemitism comes from envy, from the fear that the Jew is superior, that he might be the Chosen, and fear and envy translate into hatred. Mark Twain said that antisemitism exists because the Jew is smarter and a better business man. The Gentile therefore fears the Jews as a superior competitor who threatens his livelihood or at least embarrasses him by succeeding more. The ironic thing about antisemitism is that Jews have made an incredible positive contribution to human civilization grossly disproportionate to their numbers. Jews are one-quarter of one percent of the global population. One and one-half percent of the American population. One percent of Canadian population. But look at the Nobel prizes, the significant Jewish contributions to medicine, physics, chemistry, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, law, literature, business, entertainment, media, etc. One quarter of the Forbes Richest Americans are Jewish. One quarter of Canada’s richest people are Jewish. Israel’s high tech and biotech are world leaders. How about solar, agriculture, irrigation, disaster remediation. Human nature is such that we begin to resent our benefactors, and then to hate them for showing us up and making us dependant.
    It is therefore too complex an issue to blame solely on religious teaching.
