Courthouse evacuated at Shafia murder trial due to bomb threat

KINGSTON, Ont. – Closing arguments in the Shafia family murder trial have been put on hold due to a bomb threat at the courthouse in Kingston, Ont.

The building has been evacuated and court is adjourned until at least 1 p.m. ET.

While police would only say there was a ”security concern,” a source told The Canadian Press the reason for the evacuation was a bomb threat.

Before the proceedings resumed this morning, the lead detective in the Shafia case told everyone in the courthouse to leave the building. There is an increased police presence in the area, including a canine unit.

Mohammad Shafia, 58, his wife Tooba Yahya, 42, and their son Hamed, 21, have each pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder.

They’re accused of killing teenage Shafia daughters Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, as well as Shafia’s first wife in his polygamous marriage.

Staff Sgt. Bill Kennedy would not confirm a bomb threat was the reason for the evacuation.

“All I’m saying is that there’s a security concern and the court has been evacuated,” he said.

  1. I’m really getting annoyed now at these filthy scumbags trying to halt the course of justice. Sooner or later something is going to snap!
