Yemen: Dozens of militants overpower guards, break out of prison

Sanaa, 22 June (AKI) – At least 40 rebels escaped from a prison in southern Yemen Wednesday after inmates reportedly grabbed weapons from their guards and were helped by militants from outside the compound located on the Arabian Sea. Convicted terrorists and suspected militants held in protective custody pending trial fled the prison in Mukalla, provincial capital of the Hadramawt province. Arab-language satellite news channel al-Arabiya described the escapees as members of Al-Qaeda. In a 2006 jailbreak in Yemen, 23 prisoners managed to escape from a prison in Yemen’s capital Sanaa. Yemen’s military faces Al-Qaeda militants, Islamists and separatists in the north as well as anti-government unrest.
