THE DREAM OF THE DEPUTY MINISTER IN OSLO: THE UNITED NATIONS SHOULD BOMBARD ISRAEL WITH ROCKETS

By Manfred Gerstenfeld

The growing anti-Semitism in Europe leads not only in Israel to concern. US The republican Senator Sam Brownback sent last week a protest letter to the Norwegian Ambassador in Washington, Wegger Strommen, in view of a series of anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli incidents in Norway. Brownback wrote: “I have been contacted by human rights activists over increasing reports of anti-Semitism in Norway often linked to events in the Middle East…” He added: “these events are concerning particularly as they have sometimes involved prominent members of Norwegian society.” Brownback also wrote: “Norway is a democracy and, as such, its citizens have the freedom to criticize individuals and nations. However, continued unaddressed negative attacks and behaviors leads to further hate and anti-Semitism.”
What made the letter important was that it was written by a member of the small pro-Norwegian lobby in the Senate. The letter was first published by the blogger Norway, Israel and the Jews. It was based on two pages provided by the Simon Wiesenthal Center which Brownback appended to his letter. This listed ten anti-Semitic events which included Minister Kristin Halvorsen standing next to a sign at an anti-Israeli demonstration which read “United States and Israel – the greatest axis of evil”. It mentioned that Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg (Labor) had phoned two Hamas-supporting doctors in Gaza during Cast Lead, Erik Fosse and Mads Gilbert, telling them that the whole of Norway stood behind them. A book about their experiences, which included blood libel accusations against Israel, had a back cover comment written by Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Previously Støre had lied to the press about recalling a Norwegian diplomat from Saudi Arabia who had sent a text comparing Israel to the Nazis on the Ministry’s email. Many months later it was discovered that she was still stationed in Riyadh. Also noted was that King Harald V had bestowed the country’s top award on cartoonist Finn Graff, who had depicted Ehud Olmert as a Nazi.
Ingrid Fiskaa, a deputy minister (Socialist Left) told a newspaper that she dreamed about the UN sending rockets against Israel. In the letter there were also statements about anti-Semitic riots in Oslo, bullying of Jewish children in schools, the shooting of the synagogue in 2006 and the desecration of the two Jewish cemeteries in Oslo.
In the meantime also elsewhere anti-semitism in Europe is increasing in a great variety of ways.
