Free Speech Irshad Manji Salman Rushdie

Irshad Manji and Salman Rushdie Discuss Honor and Shame Within Islam and Freedom of Expression…….

Irshad Manji talks with Salman Rushdie about the UN’s Declaration of Human Rights, and the contradiction between its mandate to uphold the rights to freedom of expression and the protection against ‘honor’ being violated. It’s well worth the time to view.

The second video which contains the second half of the talk stumbles a bit, the Tundra Tabloids can only agree in part with a portion of the latter video. Rushdie errs in his comparison of the Samizdat network that operated during the era of the now defunct Soviet Union, with the “voices of the moderate Muslims” in the Islamic world today.

While he’s (Rushdie) correct in saying that Brezhnev and others in the Soviet Politburo did not speak for the majority of Soviet citizenry….unlike Islam, Marxist-Lenin ideology didn’t have 1400 years of a death cult mentality to help spearhead its take over of the world.

There are a lot of comparisons to be made between the two ideologies, but Marxism-Leninism is an evolving (though highly discredited) ideology, something of which the Koran has successfully resisted all through its existence. But nonetheless, the second vid is worth watching for the portions where Salman Rushdie gets it right. 1. Rushdie is one of the not many sane people of our time, and as a sane person living in sick times, he lives under death threats for decades.
