Obama Says U.S. Could Be Seen as a Muslim Country, Too
HAHN, Germany — As President Obama prepared to leave Washington to fly to the Middle East, he conducted several television and radio interviews at the White House to frame the goals for a five-day trip, including the highly-anticipated speech Thursday at Cairo University in Egypt.
In an interview with Laura Haim on Canal Plus, a French television station, Mr. Obama noted that the United States also could be considered as “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.” He sought to downplay the expectations of the speech, but he said he hoped the address would raise awareness about Muslims.
“Now, I think it’s very important to understand that one speech is not going to solve all the problems in the Middle East,” Mr. Obama said. “And so I think expectations should be somewhat modest.”
He previewed several themes and objectives for the speech, which aides said the president intended to tinker with — and rewrite — aboard Air Force One during his 12-hour flight to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
“What I want to do is to create a better dialogue so that the Muslim world understands more effectively how the United States, but also how the West thinks about many of these difficult issues like terrorism, like democracy, to discuss the framework for what’s happened in Iraq and Afghanistan and our outreach to Iran, and also how we view the prospects for peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Mr. Obama said.
The president said the United States and other parts of the Western world “have to educate ourselves more effectively on Islam.”
“And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world,” Mr. Obama said. “And so there’s got to be a better dialogue and a better understanding between the two peoples.”
The speech on Thursday has many intended audiences, but among them are the young people in Cairo and beyond.
“I think the most important thing I want to tell young people is that, regardless of your faith, those who build as opposed to those who destroy I think leave a lasting legacy, not only for themselves but also for their nations,” Mr. Obama said. “And the impulse towards destruction as opposed to how can we study science and mathematics and restore the incredible scientific and knowledge — the output that came about during centuries of Islamic culture.”
The president is flying Air Force One directly from Washington to Riyadh. The White House press corps — traveling on a chartered United 767 — is refueling in Hahn, Germany.
I can readily dispel this total lack of common sense coming from Obama. Plus, to put the icing on the cake, I can discard the common PC/MC propaganda myth of "Muslims being a race, so therefore critics of Islam are racists" to go with it. Here's how:
Of course, Muslims are not a race. The 7 largest Muslim communities today are Indonesia (237 million people according to a July 2008 estimate), Bangladesh (approx. 150 million people, homogenously Bengali by ethnicity), Pakistan (approx. 172 million people, ethnically heterogenous Baluchi, Pashto, Panjabi, Sindhi, Mohajir [Indian Muslims who fled India in 1947], Siraiki), Nigeria (approx. 146 million, and Black African) and last but not least, Turkey (approx. 71 million [and Turks are definitely not Arabs] and Iran (approx. 70 million people, of which 51% ethnic Persians, 19% other Persian peoples [Kurds, Gilaki, Mazandarani, Baluchi and Lurs] and 24% Azeri, a Turkic people)
There's only one Arab country in the list with 75 million inhabitants, of which 90% are Muslim: Egypt ranking at number 5 ! Conclusion: although Arabs are clearly intent on assimilating other cultures to pan-Arabism, within the global Muslim community they are a minority. There are more non-Arab Muslims combined in comparison with Arab countries ! Christians or other religious denominations are a very marginal minority (numerically speaking)in these countries.
Last but not least, India has the largest Muslim population in the world of any NON-Muslim-dominated country.(approx. 140 million) And again, none of those Muslims are Arabs !
So there you have it:
1) Obama is pissing in the wind and can't get his facts straight (quite odd when you think that he has actually lived in Indonesia)
2) Muslims are NOT a race, so critics of Islam are NOT racists !
3) not taking into account all other non-Arab Muslim countries, like Turkmenistan, Afghanistan,Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Somalia, most former French/British colonies in Northwest Africa, the Maldives,…et al. it is safe to say that ethnically, Arabs are a minority in the Muslim world. (and to top it all off, they are geopolitically divided as well)

President O'Bama will be with us until 2013. Get used to it!
Don't have a cow over every news media story. The LIB news media hates Israel and they will take every statement President O'Bama makes out of context to say: "President O'Bama wants to destroy Israel just like we've wanted to all along."
Israel exists. The Jewish people are empowered with nationhood and a competent armed force. There's only so much even the most anti-Semitic President can do about that.
President George H.W. Bush put his best friend in charge of the State Department. In a cabinet meeting, this best friend, James Baker uttered the words: "F*ck the Jews! They didn't vote for us."
18 years later, Israel still lives.
Now we have a LIB media mis-representing the President of the United States policy on Israel. The LIB media's agenda is to incite hatred for Jews. Yet their is resistance from the general public. And just in case you hadn't noticed, newspapers in America are going broke; news media outlets are financially stressed. Albert Einstein once said that the definition of insanity was "doing the same thing over and over; expecting a different result". That's the LIB media in a nutshell and they're going broke because nobody believes them anymore.
So don't have a cow over this stuff. Once President O'Bama actually puts his foot in his mouth about Israel, he'll be brought down as fast as Papa Bush was when he made his "thousand lobby-ists" remark.
My advice is to be patient and don't get hysterical. I think President O'Bama is destined to learn things the HARD way, but he's a bright guy so my hope is that will indeed LEARN.
You and I know that the more President O'Bama sucks up to Iranian Shiites and Wahhabi Muslims, the more he will get slapped down for not being Muslim ENOUGH. The only question is whether President O'Bama will adopt "battered wife syndrome" in response (as Presidents Bush and Carter did) or whether he'll suck it up fight back.
We don't know the answer to that right now. I'm just sitting back to see how this all plays out.
In the mean time, Barack O'Bama will be America's President until 2013 so we'll just have to figure out how we're going to cope with that.
