WINDSOR, Ont.—Jewish groups expressed deep disappointment yesterday after delegates at a Canadian Union of Public Employees conference of university locals voted in favour of a boycott of Israeli universities.“It’s got nothing to do with individual academics,” CUPE Ontario president Sid Ryan said at the conference in Windsor.
The boycott protests the Israeli siege of Gaza, he said, and will focus on university programs that research and develop weapons used against Palestinians. Ryan described the move as an “adjunct” to a resolution passed in 2006 that called for an economic boycott of Israel. […]Bernie Farber, chief executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, predicted the boycott will hurt the union in the long run.“CUPE Ontario will become less important in the eyes of mainstream Canada,” he warned. B’nai Brith Canada said in a statement that the boycott is “discriminatory and racist.”“It marginalizes its supporters here at home and disenfranchises CUPE members who are supportive of democratic Israel and its right to defend its citizens against terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah,” said Frank Dimant, executive vice-president of the group.“ CUPE has gone far afield of its mandate by pushing through a resolution that at its very core is racist, employs a double standard, and which seeks to put a stranglehold on genuine academic exchange.”
The TT likes the picture of Ryan that Pamela is running over at Atlas Shrugs:
What an upside down world we live in. Democratic Israel gets targeted for boycotts, while known thuggish dictatorships do not. A “human rights” conference is being planned for Geneva this April, called Durban II, which is going to be nothing more that an anti-Semitic hate festival with an agenda to deligitimize the Jewish state, while promoting legislation against anti-religious defamation. In short, OIC’s main goal at the conference is to “diss Jews” while promoting Islam’s exalted status of being beyond any kind of critique from non-Muslims. KGSH/T: For the NYT picture: Kumitonttu
