The Tundra Tabloids Visits The Jewish Synagogue of Turku…….

I was noticeably absent all day yesterday due to visiting the southern Finnish city of Turku, which used to be at one time a capital city. So I took the time to visit Turku’s only Jewish Synagogue.

The building was built in 1912, with the city of Turku providing the property on which it sits. It is now considered a historical building and listed on the city’s museum list of cultural historical sites.A beautiful building built on the Byzantine architectural style, which includes a domed ceiling,

Chief spokesman for the Jewish community in Turku, Ruth Hassan.

It was a very nice way to spend the afternoon, Ruth Hassan is a marvelous woman, and very gracious with her time. Hopefully the small Turku community of 130 Jews will one day experience a rejuvenation in their numbers. It would be real shame if that magnificant building were to become just a museum. KGS

  1. Dear Mrs./Mr.

As a great-grandson of Dr. Tobias Lewenstein, Chief-Rabbi of Denmark (1903-1912), who was invited by your community to inaugurate the synagogue in 1912, I would like to ask you if you would have any documents from that time who where printed for the occasion (perhaps also the text of his speech, etc.).

If indeed you have such documents, could you please scanned them and send to me by e-mail.

Thank you very much in advance,

    Aron Goldschmidt

    P. S. : what was the exact date of the inauguration?
