“Muslims Against Sharia condemn treatment of women by the State of Israel. Government-sanctioned polygamy is unbecoming of a country that claims to be the only true Democracy in the Middle East. We call on Israeli Knesset to immediately enact a law prohibiting married men to marry more women. No civilized society of the 21st century can permit this medieval practice. No civilized society treat its women as less than human beings.”
This statement was made in connection with the latest incident in Israel about an Israeli Arab that fathered 67 children. Polygamy in Israel is allowed for Muslims in order to safeguard their religious, cultural traditions.
There are obvious reasons as to why Israel allows sharia (to some degree) to exist within the Jewish state. In trying to prove to its neighbors and the Arab/Muslim world that the Jewish state is safeguarding the rights of its Muslim minorities, it has allowed standard anti-democratic forms of sharia to exist within its borders.
The MAS is correct in pointing out that anti-democratic inconsistency, but what Israel can’t afford at the moment is to agitate its Muslim minority into becoming a “fifth column” of anti-Israel dissent. Everything in its time and place, but yes, sharia as an alternate legal system in Israel must be done away with. *L* KGS
Update: Esther reminds the Tundra Tabloids that : “Polygamy is forbidden by law in Israel, just like it is in Europe. This guy must have gotten married by abusing the law. For example, he might have gotten married outside the country and then requested his lawful marriage (in a Muslim state) to be recognized by Israel. This is the same way that European Muslims get past polygamy laws.”
The Tundra Tabloids stand corrected:
“Article 176 of the Penal Law (1977) prohibits polygamy. It provides that “a married man who marries another woman, and a married woman who marries another man, should be sentenced to five years in jail.” According to the law, polygamous marriage contravenes a woman’s right to equality with men, and can serious emotional and financial consequences for her dependants.”
Kudos to Esther for pointing that important fact out. *L* KGS
