Gen. Yasar Buyukanit, chief of the military isn’t having any of it:
“Our nation has been watching the behavior of those separatists who can’t embrace Turkey’s unitary nature and centers of evil [edit: Gül and the AK-P] that systematically try to corrode the secular nature of the Turkish Republic.
Secular incumbent, Ahmet Necdet Sezer, is in step with the chief of the military:
“Nefarious plans to ruin Turkey’s secular and democratic nature emerge in different forms everyday,” […] “The military will, just as it has so far, keep its determination to guard social, democratic and secular Turkey.”
I assume that since EU Enlargement Commissioner, Ollie Rehn (Fin) has already stated that..:
“Turkey must abide by the rule of law and civilian control over the military, warning that if the government wanted to join the EU “it needs to respect these principles.”
…he will again issue the very same warning to the Turkish military to “stay out of politics”, even though it might very well lead to an Islamized Turkey. Once again the question remains:
Is the present day appeal for Islamism in Turkish society coming from the ground “grass roots” level, with the AKP simply responding to it. Or does it originate from within the AKP’s own political agenda, which promotes a “step-by-step” creeping towards the Islamization of Turkish society? More here. *L* KGS
Update: The Islamist wins…as expected.
