Finland Iraq Peace Plans

Finland to Manage Talks Between Iraqi Sunni And Shi’ia Groups……?

According to YLE news, Sunni and Shi’ite representatives from Iraq will be soon making their way to Finland, as guests of former Finnish president, Martti Ahtisaari’s Crisis Management Initiative group.

The scheduled round table discussions in Helsinki, will focus on reaching some kind of workable arrangement between the two sides, which is hoped to head off any further plunge into sectarian violence.

Former president Ahtisaari had been working –up until a few months ago– to solve the Kosovo problem, but that situation has ended in a stalemate. There are interesting dissenting viewpoints –that appear to be well supported by the facts– that serve to highlight the difficulty in solving that mess.

Hopefully success can be achieved this time around, by helping both sides to reach some kind of mutual agreement. Perhaps the current success of the US “troop surge” in Baghdad, will provide an extra added impetus to solve the deadlock. *L* KGS
