It has been eleven days since fifteen British sailors and marines were taken hostage by Iran in Iraqi waters, and still the saga continues. What should have been strongly denounced by the international community as a clear breach of international law and the Geneva Conventions, has been treated as a kind of “misunderstanding” by most of the EU states.
The inept UN Security Council couldn’t even bring itself to condemn the Iranians for the hostage taking, in spite of the fact that Britain was operating in Iraqi waters under a UN mandate. The EU managed issued a joint statement over their “concern” for the hostages, which amounted to the waving a white flag of surrender. This of course sets the stage for future outrages by rogue states who wish to flaunt themselves in the face of a seemingly helpless international community.
Call me biased, but when has the Iranians ever proved themselves to be trustworthy? Any reasonable person would trust the UK’s version of events than the tyrannical government of the mullahs, any day of the week. So what do we actually know about the events that led to the present stalemate?
The BBC reports that:
1 Crew boards merchant ship 1.7NM inside Iraqi waters
2 HMS Cornwall was south-east of this, and inside Iraqi waters
3 Iran tells UK that merchant ship was at a different point, still within Iraqi waters
4 After UK points this out, Iran provides alternative position, now within Iranian waters
So as the free west sits on its collective thumbs, the Iranians continue to manipulate their own population and the rest of the international community with propaganda footage of British personnel, repeatedly admitting that they are “sorry for tresspassing into Iranian territorial waters”. I don’t know about you, but this makes my blood boil.
Britain is in need of some serious soul searching, in a different age, the Brits would have sunk every Iranian ship on sight until their 15 sailors and marines were returned. *L* KGS
