The UN designated last November that January 27, the day Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp was liberated, to be an International Day of Commemoration to honor the victims of the Holocaust. Over six million Jews were systematically exterminated by the Nazis during WWII. The Nazi regime worked vigorously to ensure the complete and total destruction of Europes’ Jews, devouring entire cities, towns, synagogues and families in its death camps, sparing no one. It is therefore, of vital importance that the world remembers these victims of National Socialism, in order to keep fresh in our minds the unspeakable inhumanity mankind is capable of if left to its own devices.
Let us also remind ourselves of the voices presently denying that the Holocaust ever happened, or of those who cast doubt on the actual number murdered, or who cynically accuse Jews of helping the Nazis to advance their own nationalist interests. Worse yet are those who repeatedly call for a new Jewish holocaust like Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as well as his fellow totalitarianists, the islamist jihadis, who are currently waging their religious war all around the world.
Totalitarianism is unfortunately still alive and well in today’s world, and that demands extra vigilance on the part of every freedom loving person to stand up and be counted. Observing today’s commemoration to honor the victims of the Holocaust, is a right and righteous step in that direction. *L* KGS
