The recent criminal allegations against Israeli President Moshe Katsav, has broken the silence on the Israeli armed forces “machismo” culture, as well as the trial of Justice Minister Haim Ramon, for kissing an Israeli soldier against her will. According to Israeli historian and senior fellow at the Shalem Center, Michael Oren;
“When I was in the army it was assumed that the office of every senior officer was essentially a harem for him. Israel is emerging from adolescence into adulthood”.
The times are a changing for the Israeli military, and for the better. That these violations are being addressed instead of brushed under the carpet, is a sign of the maturing of Israeli society and its judicial system.
